The AccaDoo racing tipsters know the value of following the winner of the Arkle Novices’ Chase in the next season’s Champion Chase, and we’re adding Nicky Henderson’s Altior to our Champion Chase 2018 books at 5/2.

Seven-year-old Altior went into the Arkle unbeaten as a novice over fences and won as an odds-on favourite should, defeating Cloudy Dream by six lengths. Henderson’s charge didn’t have things entirely his own way, as the plucky Charbel had led throughout but fell at the second last and so we were denied the opportunity to see the two of them battle it out.

The AccaDoo boys liked the way Altior was travelling at the time of Charbel’s fall and we think he probably would have had Kim Bailey’s stable star covered.

Interestingly, the AccaDoo racing rating experts actually rate Altior’s performance against his seniors at Newbury earlier in the season as superior to his Arkle win, but the fact Altior has now won at two consecutive Cheltenham Festivals has to be a positive for his Champion Chase 2018 chances.

And that Newbury run, we believe, would put Altior equal with Special Tiara and Fox Norton, who battled out the finish of the 2017 Champion Chase and give him a superb chance in the 2018 edition.

Other credible rivals to Altior in the Champion Chase 2018 include Douvan, who injured himself in the 2017 renewal, and the aforementioned Charbel, but there is a serious amount of straw clutching involved if they are to be backed antepost.

Instead, we’re sticking with the young contender and adding him to our portfolio at 5/2.
