This World Cup 3rd Place Playoff: England v Belgium Bet Builder is picking not one goal-scorer but two! It could be a cracking game to watch with little pressure on the result.

This is not an easy one to call but Belgium have the class and experience to take down this youthful England side for the second time this tournament. When they met in the group stages it was a dead rubber game between two second strings. This time isn’t much different apart from both sides should be full strength. Both sides will be happy with their progress in the tournament, England more so with very low expectations at the start. The golden generation of Belgium pretty much lived up to the hype but couldn’t quite get past the strong French unit in the semis.

France ended a seven game winning streak for Belgium but we think Belgium will just have too much quality for England here. In theory it should be an open game, with neither side really that bothered about 3rd or 4th placed finishes. They’re both just trying to make their nation proud and put on a good show as a final curtain call.

Belgium have scored goals in their last seven games, plenty of them. Two against Brazil, three against Japan, five against Tunisia and three against Panama. These 3rd placed play-offs are notoriously high scoring. Previous years have looked like this:

2014: Holland 3-0 Brazil
2010: Germany 3-2 Uruguay
2006: Germany 3-1 Portugal
2002: Turkey 3-2 South Korea
1998: Croatia 2-1 Holland
1994: Sweden 4-0 Bulgaria
1990: Italy 2-1 England

Lukaku for golden boot?

Kane is leading the way with six goals and should take the Golden Boot award for this World Cup. Only Gary Lineker has won the award from England so this would be a remarkable achievement. Bar a performance of a lifetime from Griezmann or Mbappe, who both need a hat-trick or more, it is down to Lukaku to keep the pressure on Kane. He is two goals behind Kane and this could be his chance to bag a few goals. Lukaku has smashed home four of Belgium’s goals this tournament and gets great service from Hazard and De Bruyne.

Our other goal-scorer pick is Sterling. The player that divides the nation. Frustrating at times but capable of incredible skills and goals, we think he has to score one in this tournament at some point. He gets in great positions but his composure in front of goal is questionable. We are backing the Man City man to net in this game and prove some of his doubters wrong.
