Antoine Griezmann to score most goals in the tournament
This World Cup 2018 Top Goalscorer is a tough one to call with so many great strikers on show and plenty of quality sides set to do well.
What is the secret to predicting the top goal-scorer of a world cup?
Well if we look at previous golden boot winners, it certainly isn’t always a player from the winning team. However, they are from a side that progresses to the quarter finals at least. We look at whether the player will play every game, what their form is like and whether they are likely to play in high-scoring group games because that is when players bag most of their World Cup goals.
Who are the favourites?
Unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi is favourite at 9/1, closely followed by Neymar Jr at 10/1. Both of these are obviously excellent shouts because they will be in high-scoring teams in fairly straightforward groups. If Brazil smash Costa Rica 5-0 in the group stages then a Neymar hat-trick (or more) seems likely. One high scoring game like that can win the golden boot.
Germany’s Tino Werner is a generous price at 16/1, the same price as Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus, and both will no doubt feature on the scoresheet at some point in the tournament. Germany have a reasonably tough group where goals may not be as easy to come by and Jesus will be playing second fiddle to Neymar.
Who are the best outsiders?
There’s three players that catch the eye in the ‘best of the rest’ category. Romelu Lukaku at 20/1 is an interesting prospect because he is in a side that will create a lot of chances. With the likes of Tunisia and Panama in the group stages, Lukaku could have a field-day. Belgium are tipped to go quite far in the tournament too so this could be his tournament.
The other two are Luis Suarez at 25/1 and Sergio Aguero at a big 33/1. Both players have unbelievable talent and goal-scoring abilities. The only doubt over Suarez is how many chances Uruguay will create as a side. And also how far will they progress? With Aguero, the concern is he may not start all the games considering the plethora of attacking options Argentina have and how central he will play with Lionel Messi.
Why Antoine Griezmann?
The Frenchman has had a great season for Atletico Madrid and if he performs at this world cup, his price tag will be extortionate. At 27 years old, Griezmann is at his peak and in a side packed full of quality. He netted 29 goals in all competitions this season, including two in the Europa League final. With the likes of Pogba, Kante, Mbappe, Payet, Dembele, Martial and Lacazette in the French squad, scoring opportunities should be aplenty.
Peru, Australia and Denmark are in France’s group and they certainly won’t have the answer to Griezmann’s scoring prowess. If results go as predicted then France should face Croatia in the first knockout stages and then Portugal in the quarters so they have a fairly straightforward pathway to reach the semi-finals. If he gets regular starts throughout the tournament, and France play to their potential, then Griezmann is a superb price at 12/1.
