This Sunday, August 12: Tip of the Day has six selections who are all big favourites to win their games dotted around Europe.
Feyenoord open their account away to newly promoted Graafschap. The hosts have been up and down like a yoyo and always seem to struggle in the top tier. Feyenoord have been the also rans in recent years. Still considered one of the ‘big three’ in Netherlands but last season finished fourth. This year they’ll hope to rectify that by drilling Graafschap first game up.
Lyon have beaten Amiens four times in the last four meetings. They finished an impressive third place last season, pipping Marseille to the Champions League place. Amiens were down in the bottom half, eight points off the drop zone. They’ll be expecting nothing from this one.
Rangers were unlucky to be held to a draw at Aberdeen. A man harshly sent off and a last minute goal was their downfall. Gerrard rightly praised his side’s efforts and a home game at St Mirren is the perfect chance to get three points on the board. Five of their last six head-to-heads have ended in Ranger’s victories whilst the other was a draw. Newly promoted St Mirren will find this one very tough indeed.
Alkmaar had a barnstorming season last time out. Finishing third above Feyenoord was a huge achievement and one they’ll want to repeat this campaign. The last five head-to-heads with Breda have gone Alkmaar’s way. The visitors finished four points off the drop zone and will be lucky if they can get anything from this away trip.
Sporting will be keen to better their third place finish last season. An away trip to a Moreirense side who narrowly avoided relegation should be the perfect start for them. Six of the last seven meetings have gone Sporting’s way with the other being a draw. You have to go back 14 years to find the last time Moreirense beat Sporting. This should be an away win.
PSG are 1/10 odds on favourites to beat Caen so feel free to leave them out of the acca. However, it is free money. They won the league by a country mile last season, scoring 108 goals in 38 games. Cavani and Neymar scored twenty more goals between them than Caen did all season as a team. Caen finished one point off relegation and scored the fewest goals in the division. If ever a banker existed, it is this.
